Woopaa123 Pulls The Upset In The $170,840 Old South Futurity At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA–MAY 20, 2023–The $170,840 Old South Futurity served as the featured race at Delta Downs on Saturday night and the event was won by 11-1 longshot Woopaa123 under jockey Cipriano Vidana.

The Jose Espinosa trainee was making his second stakes appearance after finishing fifth in the Louisiana Downs Futurity on March 25.

Starting from post position one in a field of nine, Woopaa123 wasting no time leaving the gate as he launched a quick start before taking the lead over his talented rivals.

The property of Party Tyme Racing was under pressure throughout the 330-yard test but proved best by hitting the finish line 1-1/2 lengths in front of runner-yup Frankie Jr, while Docs Best Medicine checked in another nose behind in third.

Woopaa123 covered the distance of the Old South Futurity in a time of 16.656 seconds. That time equaled a speed index of 94.

The win by Woopaa123 was the second of his four-race career and he earned $85,420 for the effort. His career bankroll now stands at $107,863.

Bred in Texas by his trainer, Woopaa123 is a 2-year-old sorrel gelding by leading first-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 out of the Moon Shake mare Shalinashake. Espinosa is also the breeder

Runner-up Frankie Jr as game late under jockey Arturo Alvarez to earn $29,043 for second. Jose Luis Sanchez III conditions the Texas-bred son of first-crop sire Kas Tempting for owner Jimmie Rodriguez. Roberto Angel, F. Laurel and J. Garza bred Fankie Jr from the Stoli mare Fear This Stoli. He has banked $42,043 in three starts.

Docs Best Medicine, an Oklahoma-bred son of multiple stakes sire Docs Best Card, closed fast under jockey Jose Herbert to pick up $17,048 for third. Karla Diaz Gomez and Jose Sierra own the $12,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate out of Maddies Special Turf by Strawfly Special. Charles Cox is the breeder.

Fans who backed Woopaa123 were rewarded with payoffs of $25.80 to win, $10.20 to place and $7 to show. Frankie Jr paid $7.60 to place and $4.40 to show. Docs Best Medicine was worth $9.60 to show.

Ec Temp Gl, Lightning Trend, Streakin Fast Blood, San Lorenzita, Regardlezz and Pilot Wrangler completed the field.
