VINTON, LA – JULY 16, 2022 – San Lorenzo Moon and David Alvarez dueled with Cool Ya Jets and Ubaldo Luna but prevailed in the $70,000 Louisiana Juvenile Stakes at Delta Downs. The Juvenile was a consolation race for the Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1), the feature race of Delta’s Saturday night card.

San Lorenzo Moon ($5.20) won by a half-length as the post-time favorite for trainer Jesus Marquez. The final time for the 350-yard stake was :17.590 for a 90 speed index.

Rogelio Marquez, Jr. owns and bred the Apollitical Blood filly.

“She was a $68,000 repurchase at the LQHBA sale. People thought maybe she was too small but I know one thing: she’s got her mama’s heart.”

If San Lorenzo Moon did inherit her dam’s heart, she may have a bright career ahead of her. Her dam is the talented Dashnunder Afullmoon, by Heza Fast Dash, a multiple graded stakes winning mare with over $700,000 earned.

San Lorenzo Moon finished third in her trial for the Lee Berwick as the heavy favorite and failed to qualify for the final.

“Sometimes it’s difficult when you don’t make the cut but there’s always a consolation and then what comes next,” continued Marquez, Jr. “She’s paid into the LQHBA Sale Futurity and LQHBA Louisiana Million.”

Cool Ya Jets made her second stakes appearance in the Juvenile; she also qualified to the Lassie Futurity (RG2) in May.  The daughter of Jet Black Patriot is trained by Kenneth Roberts, Sr. for owner Pete Scarmardo.

Bayou Stirling Equine, LLC bred Cool Ya Jets out of Mcm on Thin Ice, by Heza Fast Dash. She has one win and one second place finish from four races and has earned $26,814.

Rouge Eagle and Gilbert Ortiz made a strong closing move to be up in time for third place. The Moonin the Eagle gelding was third in his trial, which was his second career start. He broke his maiden in his debut, a trial for the Laddie Futurity in May.

Rouge Eagle is trained by Heath Taylor for owners Cream of the Crop and Michael Taylor. He was bred by Spring Hill Farms, LLC. He has yet to finish out of the money and has earned $14,800 in three career starts.

Completing the field were Bella Marie, Five Bar Jess Cartel, Pop a Top Corona, Toast to Blue, Diamondonatrain, Bad Mammie 23 and Just Pollitical.
