VINTON, LA—MAY 21, 2022—Delta Downs closed out its fourth week of American Quarter Horse racing on Saturday night and race fans were treated to a pair of exciting stakes events on the program.

The $148,040 Old South Futurity was won by Jes An Angel and the $35,000 Mother’s Day Stakes was won in impressive fashion by Sheza Freighttrain T.

Jes An Angel came into the Old South Futurity as the fastest qualifier and didn’t disappoint her backers as she broke well and battled for the early lead before getting clear late in the 330-yard test for 2-year-olds.

At the finish line she was ¾ of a length to the good of Coronas Margarita, who finished second. Rf Fearless Heroine rounded out the top three by finishing another neck behind the top two.

Jes An Angel, who was ridden to victory by Camilo Castillo, covered the distance over a fast track in 17.173 seconds. The property of Lance R. Moore who is trained by Dustin Rhodes, earned a speed index of 75 for her effort.

The win by Jes An Angel was the third of her four-race career. She earned $74,020 for the big win on Saturday and now has a career bankroll of $85,306. Her only off-the-board performance was a troubled effort in the Grade 2 $324,288  Louisiana Futurity earlier this year.

Bred in Texas by Jerry Windham, Jes An Angel is a 2-year-old sorrel filly by Jess Zoomin, out of the First down Dash mare Ms Kates Angel. She was purchased for $10,000 at the Heritage Place September Yearling Sale in 2021.

Making just her second career start, Coronas Margarita earned $25,167 for finishing second. Trainer Leonel Hernandez saddled the $10,000 TQHA Yearling Sale graduate for owner Victor Garcia.

Eleazar Hernandez had the riding call aboard the Open Me A Corona filly out of Pyc Paint Alis Wagon by Pyc Paint Your Wagon. Raedale Phipps is the breeder.

Rf Fearless Heroine, a $25,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling repurchase, finished a neck back to pick up $14,804 for third.  Racing for owner-breeder Rogers Farm, the daughter of champion sire Valiant Hero is conditioned by trainer Vann Haywood and was ridden by Gilbert Ortiz.  Out of the Corona Cartel mare Fearona, Rf Fearless Heroine has banked $19,264 in four starts this season.

Sent to the gate at odds of 2-1, Jes an Angel paid $6.20 to win, $4.20 to place and $3.40 to show. Coronas Margarita returned $5.40 to place and $4 to show. Rf Fearless Heroine was worth $5.60 to show.

Specials Corona, Reach Thru, A Revenant Wave, Butter My Perry, Sendsation, Rain In The Dough and Ruse Choice completed the field.

Delta Downs will race again next Wednesday through Saturday. The track will host three stakes races next week including the $310,695 Lassie Futurity on Friday as well as the $331,880 Laddie Futurity and $40,000 Vinton Stakes on Saturday. Post time each night is at 6:15 pm.
