Cos Im Kool Scores Big Win In The $72,215 Old South Derby At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA—MAY 31, 2021—Delta Downs hosted a special Memorial Day program on Monday which featured a pair of very competitive stakes races, the $72,215 Old South Derby and the $34,700 Mother’s Day Stakes (see additional story).

The Old South Derby was won by John D. Henson’s Cos Im Kool under jockey Ricardo Hernandez, Jr. The Kenneth Weeks trainee came into the race as the eight fastest qualifier of the 350-yard event and was dispatched at odds of 14-1.

But that didn’t discourage the bay runner as he dug in late to defeat Gias Fred by a head. Corona Finish would up third, another neck behind the top pair.

Cos Im Kool covered the distance of the Old South Derby in a time of 17.488 second while running over a fast track. The time equaled a speed index of 93.

The win by Cos Im Kool marked the third of his six-race career, in which he has never finished worse than third. His $36,108 paycheck on Monday brought his career bankroll up to $63,008.

Bred in Louisiana by Richard Ortego, Cos I’m Kool is a 3-year-old gelding by Tee Cos, out of the First N Kool mare Rime For Wilena.

Fans who backed Cos Im Kool at the wagering windows were rewarded handsomely with payoffs of $30.20 to win, $10.60 to place and $6.40 to show. Gias Fred paid $4.40 to place and $4 to show. Corona Finish was worth $4.20 to show.

Runner-up Gias Fred earned $12,277 for second. Richard Lane named Bobby Ransom to ride the Paine Me Perry gelding for owner GIA Equine Cinter, LLC. Harry Kenny Cook bred the brown gelding in South Carolina from the Game Patriot mare Miss Game Tee.

JP Quarter Horses Corona Finish picked up $7,222 for third. Martin Trego sent out the Corona Cartel colt from the Corona Cocktail mare Theslatesclean. H & H Ranch, Inc. bred the bay in Oklahoma. Everardo Rodriguez was riding.

Fdd Gentle Giant, Jp Jess Cartel, Fancy Pants Heidi, Sharks Jess Jumpin, Grace Of Monaco, Tee Bone Special and Tf Jess A Cartel completed the field.

Delta Downs will continue its race week on Tuesday with a program that includes this year’s $95,585 Old South Futurity for 2-year-olds who qualified on May 11. First post time for the 10-race card is set for 3 pm Central Time.
