San Lorenzo Corona Wins Brothers Namesake Stakes Race at Delta Friday

VINTON, LA—MAY 10, 2019—San Lorenzo Corona got up at the wire to defeat Featuring Fast Jess by a nose Friday night in the $50,000Open Me A Corona(RG2) Stakes at Delta Downs.

A son of multiple stakes sire Coronas Leaving You from the Mr Eye Opener mare In The Open, San Lorenzo Corona is a full brother to AQHA racing champion Open Me A Corona, who the Delta stakes race is named for.

Ridden by jockey Victor Urieta, Jr., San Lorenzo Corona completed the 350 yards in a quick :17.276 clocking, equaling a 99 speed index. It was the debut start this season for the multiple graded stakes winner and the $30,000 winners' purse boosted his earnings to over $158,800.

Trainer Josue Ponce saddled the 5-year-old stallion for owner Rogelio Marquez, Jr. Bred by Jim and Natalie Montgomery, the gray stallion has compiled a (14) 6-1-1 record that includes wins in the Mid-City Stakes(RG3) and Opelousas Stakes(RG2).

Runner-up Featuring Fast Jet picked up $10,000 for owner Fernando Ramos. Jorge Gonzalez trains the Heza Fast Dash gelding out of Featuringmissjess by Mr Jess Perry. Jumonville Farms and Burnett Ranch bred the multiple stakes winner of $268,192. Noe Castaneda had the riding call.

Another Heza Fast Dash gelding, Gunna Be Alright, finished half-a-length back for owner Gladney 1 LLC and trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. David Alvarez rode the 4-year-old out of Jj Streakin Illusion by Streakin La Jolla. Bred by Joy Baya Foreman the stakes winner earned $5,500 to increase his bankroll to $72,722.

Sizzlin On Da Bayou, Ho Lotta Game, Achieveopiloto, Heza Made Man, Super Sonic Patriot and Jls Dash N Fire completed the field. Lightmupwithcharm was scratched.

Delta Downs will wrap up its fourth week of American Quarter Horse racing on Saturday night with a 10-race program that features the $104,705 Old South Futurity as well as the $25,000 Mother’s Day stakes. First post time is set for 6:15 pm CST.
