Volcoms Thunder Rolls To Victory In The $171,630 Firecracker Derby At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA—JULY 3, 2015—After winning his trial with the second fastest qualifying time on June 12, Raul E. Galvan’s Volcoms Thunder came through with another top performance by winning the $171,630 Firecracker Derby on Friday night at Delta Downs.

Following a clean break from starting gate and running in mid-pack early, Volcoms Thunder began to wear down his rivals under jockey Juan Marquez during the 400-yard test for 3-year-olds. At the finish line he was half-length better than On The Wagon, who wound up second, while the fastest qualifier for the event Zoomin Baby finished another neck behind in third.

Volcoms Thunder, who is trained by his owner, covered the distance over a fast track in 19.575. The clocking earned him a speed index of 95.

Volcoms Thunder has now won five of 10 lifetime starts and is a perfect two-for-two at Delta Downs. Friday’s score was worth $85,815 and it boosted his career bankroll to $179,343.

Bred in Texas by P. K. Thomas, Volcoms Thunder is a sorrel gelding by Volcom, out of the Dean Miracle mare Ill Getcha Good. Volcoms Thunder was purchased for $5,000 at the Heritage Place Mixed Sale as a yearling in 2013.

On The Wagon is a Pyc Paint Your Wagon colt racing for owner-trainer Isidro Flores. Martin Rubalcava rode the multiple stakes-placed 3-year-old out of the stakes winning and multiple stakes producing Stoli mare Xo Kate. Bred in Oklahoma by Michael Pohl, On The Wagon earned $29,177 to bring his earnings mark to $102,443.

Michael Taylor saddled Zoomin Baby for owner Craig Lauger. Jackie Sessions bred the Jess Zoomin gelding in Texas from the Royal Quick Dash mare Royal Baby Sister. Ridden by John Hamilton the gray gelding earned $17,163 for his third place effort. Already a stakes winner Zoomin Baby has won five of eight starts and earned $144,561.

Ipolito, Glimpse Of Dash, Wild On Da Whiskey, Gagastoasttobliss, Tf Rowdy Lil Perry, Jess Dance and Jess Shake A Leg completed the field.

Sent to the post as the 6-5 favorite, Volcoms Thunder returned $4.60 to win, $2.40 to place and $3.20 to show. On the Wagon was worth $6.20 to place and $3.60 to show. Zoomin Baby paid $2.60 to show.

Delta Downs closes out its next-to-last week of racing on Saturday night with a special Independence Day program that starts at 6:15 pm CT. Saturday’s program features the $318,120 Firecracker Futurity (G2).
