Little Toy Guns Takes The Louisiana Purchase Stakes On Opening Weekend at Delta Downs

VINTON, LA—APRIL 20, 2019—Delta Downs wrapped up its opening week of racing for the 2019 American Quarter Horse season on Saturday night. The 10-race program featured the $40,000 Louisiana Purchase Stakes and eight trials for this year’s $104,705 Old South Futurity (see related story).

The Louisiana Purchase was won by Juan M. Montoya’s Little Toy Guns under jockey Richard Hernandez, Jr. The Eliseo Celestino trainee defeated Sizzlin On Da Bayou by a half-length with Its What It Is finished third, another nose behind the top pair. Little Toy Guns covered 350 yards of the Louisiana Purchase in a time of :17.663 seconds while racing on a fast track.

The win by Little Toy Guns was the fourth of his 11-race career. He earned $24,000 for the effort on Saturday and now owns a lifetime bankroll of $66,814.

Bred in Louisiana by Belinda Disotell, Little Toy Guns is a 4-year-old gelding by First Prize Doc, out of the Strike the Cash mare Strikeabye Baby.

Runner-up Sizzlin On Da Bayou races for owner Joel Huitron and is conditioned by trainer Josue Huitron. Jumonville Farms and Burnett Ranch bred the son of Sizzlin Cartel from the Mr Jess Perry mare Eyejesslovelouisiana. The $8,000 second-place purse boosted the 5-year-olds earnings to nearly $90,000.

Ascencion Cepeda's Its What It Is earned $4,400 for third. Martin Trejo saddled the Game Patriot 6-year-old with Jorge Linares riding. Robicheaux Ranch Inc. bred the Game Patriot gelding form the Tres Seis mare Rebas In The House.

Game Overtime, Lil Bro Big Streak, Flamin Hot Fortune, Spit In My Corona and Mps Triple Zazoom completed the field. Fast Dashin Perry was scratched.

Sent to the gate at odds of 17-1, Little Toy Guns paid $36.60 to win, $14.20 to place and $8.20 to show. Sizzlin On Da Bayou paid $5.80 to place and $4 to show. Its What It Is was worth $3.20 to show.
