La Mos Corona Gets First Stakes Win In Billy Montgomery


La Mos Corona, under jockey Floriberto Maldonado, splashes to victory in the $30,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes Wednesday night at Evangeline Downs.

OPELOUSAS, LA—NOVEMBER 1, 2017—La Mos Corona (10-1) stepped from an optional claiming victory on August 26th to defeat Rcv Sheza Classydash by three-quarter in the $30,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes Wednesday evening at Evangeline Downs.

La Mos Corona had to withstand a stout challenge from Rcv Sheza Classydash, who broke well from the outside post in the field of eight, but had to settle for second. Sassy Chic 3341, a 17-1 longshot, managed to overcome a mediocre start and closed smartly to finish third. The even-money favorite, Punctuality, did not take a liking to the sloppy track and finished fourth.

Ridden by jockey Floriberto Maldonado, La Mos Corona raced over the sealed racetrack in :16.589 seconds, to earn a 101-speed index going 330 yards into a 4-mph headwind. It was the fourth career win for the Coronas Leaving You filly and the $18,000 winners' purse boosted her career total to $83,177.

Trainer Orlando Orozco conditions the 3-year-old for owner Manuel Alvarez. Oscar Rohne bred La Mos Corona from the multiple stakes winning Heza Fast Dash mare La Mos Chingono.

Runner-up Rcv Sheza Classydash races for owner Louis Johnson, Jr. and trainer Lanny Keith. Jockey Santiago Mendez had the riding assignment aboard the Heza Fast Dash filly out of Classy Shyanne by Toast To Dash. Bred by Track Vickers, the bay filly earned $6,000.

Sassy Chic 3341 finished a nose back to pick up the third-place payday worth $3,300. Vann Haywood conditions the homebred daughter Fast Prize Dash for Wad and Kay Loup, Jr. Alfonso Lunjan had the riding assignment.

La Mos Corona paid $21.80 to win, $10 to place and $7.20 to show. Rcv Sheza Classydash returned $6 to place and $5 to show. Sassy Chic 3341 paid $7.60 to show.

Punctuality, Jet Black Presence, Fast Dash Chicks, Ms Beauty Betty and Jetz A Streakin completed the field.

Live racing continues Thursday night at Evangeline Downs with an eight-race program. Post time will be 5:35 pm Central Time.
