Jess Bein The Hero Takes Command In Evangeline Downs Dash

OPELOUSAS, LA—OCTOBER 6, 2017—Jess Bein The Hero was in command from the start, under jockey Manual Gutierrez Friday night, to defeat Sweet Bru by half-a-length in the $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash on the 2017 opening-night Quarter Horse Season card at Evangeline Downs. Teves finished three-quarter back to take third.

Saddled by trainer Miguel Rodriguez, multiple stakes winner Jess Bein The Hero completed the 220 yards in :11.646 seconds, a 104-speed index into a 3-mph crosswind, score his fourth stakes victory this year. Owned and raced by Juan Martinez-Labastida, the son of leading sire Valiant Hero, scored his sixth win and the $12,000 winners' purse boosted his bankroll to $98,553. The black colt has only been worse than second once in nine career starts.

Bred in Texas by Curtis Crenwelge, from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Braggin, Jess Bein The Hero kicked off this year with a win in the Swift Stakes at Louisiana Downs on January 28th. He then won the Streakin La Jolla Stakes and Miss Polly Classic(G3) and was second in the Esplande Stakes in 2017.

Trainer Gary Shane Mason saddled runner-up Sweet Bru for owner Joe Ortiz. Ricardo Hernandez, Jr. rode the Louisiana-bred daughter of Embrujo Fg from the Dashin Bye mare Dashin Sweetpea. Bred by Ceburn Baker, Jr., the sorrel filly picked up $4,000 for her effort.

Teves, a Texas-bred daughter of champion sire The Louisiana Cartel, races for owner Larry Sherwood and trainer Robert Touchet. David Alvarez had the riding call aboard the brown gelding from the Mr Jess Perry mare Midnight Swingin. Bred by Lyle Guillory, multiple stakes-placed Teves earned $2,200.

Jess Bein The Hero paid $3.60 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.10 to show. Sweet Bru returned $4.40 to place and $3.40 to show. Teves paid $3.20 to show.

Pyc First Prize Mia, Scoopies Leaving You, Miss Eagle Dash, First Prize Jet and The Ram Cartel completed the field.

The opening weekend of the 2017 American Quarter Horse season at Evangeline Downs will continue Saturday night with a nine-race program. Post time will be 5:35 pm Central Time.
